As you know, we at Nashua Builders build many different types of modular structures, in all realms of business and otherwise. We build modular hotels, (you may have read our most recent blog about our modular hotel construction in Silver Creek, what will soon be the new Silver Creek hotel), modular hospitals, prefab construction in schools and education, offices, homes and more.
There is another area in prefab construction that we are not currently engaged in, but, we think it is a fantastic and perfect use of the efficiency, flexibility and affordability of modular construction. And that is: modular building in the area of correctional facilities/jails.
We learned recently about a new jail being built in Pickens County, South Carolina. Their old site was no longer able to accommodate the number of inmates that were coming through, and they knew it was time to expand. That said, their original location not only did not have enough land to accommodate what they wanted to build, but the old facility was not set up in such a way as to accommodate expansion—even if there had been enough land to hold the new construction.
So, they switched sites, and in their effort to build the new facility, they are going to use steel modular cells. They said these modular cell units are extremely durable, well-built, very safe and cost effective for this type of facility.
The really cool thing about using modular in a correctional facility is that when they created their original design plans, they knew they wanted to start off with beds/space for about 300 inmates, but knew that eventually they wanted to be able to house up to 500. Modular building is enabling them to do this. They are able to build what they need right away—the 300 bed space—and know that when the time comes to expand they won’t have to shut down the facility or change any of the ways that the facility is run. As you might imagine, a jail can not just shut down to accommodate construction!
This is just one incredible example of how modular building is the best way to go in terms of the flexibility that it allows.
